Finally Nirbhaya gets her justice!

continued from previous post

Finally, Nirbhaya. You got justice after 7 years! You were brave and gave details about the crime. You made sure that the rapists got punished.

As I remember that cold night of December 16th 2013, when Delhi shook, it reminds me of the hundreds of advices people started giving to women. How they should behave in society. The whole incident became like an example and a lesson for women who wanted to be independent and free. I would say, along with Nirbhaya being questioned, all the women were questioned for their choices to watch a movie, to be out at 9 pm in delhi and to be themselves. They were taught to be scared to be free. I really hated it when one politician said “boys will be boys”. I had to argue with people to make them understand that it was not Nirbhaya’s mistake at all and even though culprits were caught, it took 7 years , 3 months to get justice.

This was not a normal crime. This was a crime meant to teach women their place in the society. If you watch BBC’s documentary on “India’s Daughter”, you will clearly see how Nirbhaya being with a boy was what triggered the incident. Those men wanted to punish her for defying our culture. Nirbhaya wanted to live but these men decided her destiny. Even though four of the culprits got justice, one juvenile was released. I question how can a person who committed such a heinous crime, be considered juvenile. Why was his crime waived off with an award of 10,000 Rs and a sewing machine of all the things. I wish, life comes around and punishes him too.

Our society should change their thinking. Time and again, I have mentioned that women are the ones who should instill values in their sons. Women should take things in their hand to start a reform. Nirbhaya showed us how easy it is for the society to blame the weaker gender. Well, we should not let this pass. This should make women stronger. We, women, won’t go back to the dark ages, after all the struggle to move ahead. Thanks to our justice system for delivering justice. Nirbhaya can finally rest. May the lessons be learnt and such crimes not repeated again.
